Speaking on Friday evening from Taita Taveta, KCA head coach Anthony Onyango said the victory marked a historic moment for the institution. He added that the team is determined to send a strong message to their opponents and aims to bring the cup home to Nairobi.

Salome Mndala’s hat-trick helped Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA) University beat Kenyatta University 3-1 during the tournament opener at the 15th edition of the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Women-Only Championships, held at Taita Taveta University.

Speaking on Friday evening from Taita Taveta, KCA head coach Anthony Onyango said the victory marked a historic moment for the institution. He added that the team is determined to send a strong message to their opponents and aims to bring the cup home to Nairobi.

“We played a tough match today and managed to win. This is the first time we have won an opening match in such a tournament. The victory has boosted our energy and confidence heading into the remaining matches,” Onyango said, adding that he has motivated his players to dream big.

With defending champions Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) absent, last year’s finalists Kenyatta University were tipped as favourites to dominate the tournament, which kicked off on Friday and will run until Sunday to mark International Women’s Day.

Despite enjoying home support, hosts Taita Taveta University failed to break through KCA’s solid defence and went down 3-0 at the final whistle in the other match of the day.

In the third match at the same venue, Kenyatta University finally found its footing and secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Chuka University in a closely contested encounter.

The tournament continues until Sunday, culminating in celebrations for International Women’s Day.
